Eversource Begins Construction of Substation in Franklin

Project will enhance reliability for thousands of customers

MANCHESTER, N.H. (July 17, 2017) – Construction of a new substation that will help meet growing demand for power in the Franklin area will begin this week. The new Daniel Substation is named after Daniel Webster, the famous American statesman who was born in the Franklin area. The substation, to be located near the existing Webster Substation off of Webster Lake Road, will greatly enhance reliability for more than 12,000 Eversource and New Hampshire Electric Cooperative customers. This project is to address local customer needs and is not related to the Northern Pass Project, which is being reviewed by the New Hampshire Site Evaluation Committee.

“As Franklin succeeds in revitalizing the city with significant economic development projects, our investment in modernizing the energy grid is important to ensuring our customers continue to receive reliable service as the demand for power grows,” said New Hampshire Vice President of Electric Operations Joe Purington.

Eversource has worked closely with community leaders and residents of Franklin to answer questions and to incorporate a significant number of plantings into the site plan that will screen the new substation along Webster Lake Road. Tree clearing activities associated with the project were completed in December 2016, and the new landscaping, including the strategic planting of more than 160 arborvitaes on top of a four-foot berm, will be completed during construction.

Additional plantings to help screen the new substation from neighbors were installed on Carr Street, and Eversource has worked with individual property owners to identify measures that will be completed this summer to further screen the substation from their properties, and reduce visual impacts resulting from the project.

Construction activities will include site preparations, foundation installations, and the installation of new equipment. The new substation is expected to be in service by late 2018. Eversource remains committed to keeping the City of Franklin and neighbors informed throughout the construction process.
