Building Permit Process:

The Building Permit process is administered by the Planning Office.  All permits must be filed at the Planning Office at 124 Memorial Street (on the left by the entrance to Odell Park).  Copies of the various application forms are on our website, and are also available in the office, where you can also get assistance in completing the forms.

Once a permit has been issued, the Inspections are conducted by the Code Officers at the Franklin Fire Department.  They should be contacted directly to schedule an inspection.

Building Permits are required for all new construction and additions, if you are moving an interior wall, adding new plumbing fixtures, performing most electrical work, or modifying your heating or cooling units.  Simple repair and maintenance work (for example, new flooring, replacing existing cabinets, re-shingling the roof) does not require a permit.  This is basic repair and maintenance work that all home or property owners perform at some point in time.  Please contact the Planning and Zoning Office to discuss your project, or review Section 305 of the Franklin Zoning Ordinance, to better determine what work may or may not trigger the need for a permit.

It is very important that building permits be obtained, as the review process is the only way to insure that all regulations, including important life safety codes, are followed.  Having a permit in hand for your work may be an important issue for your insurance or mortgage company.

Some work, typically electrical, plumbing, or gas fitting, can be approved through a Mechanical Permit.  This is a very simple process and in some cases the work can begin as soon as you submit the application form.

Links to the different permits, including the State Energy Code Compliance form, are locatd on the Building Permits & Forms page.

Thanks for your assistance in complying with the building permit process.  Your cooperation helps protect you and your property and all of your neighbors.
