Medication Storage & Disposal
Did You Know?
Approximatley 70% of those who abuse prescription medications get them from family or friends, often by taking them right out of the medicine cabinet. (SAMHSA, 2006)
Free Local Disposal:
The Franklin Police Department has a PERMANENT medication collection box, located in the foyer of the Franklin Police Department at 5 Hancock Terrace.
The Collection Box is accessible 24 hours/day, 7 days/week. This collection box is constructed in such a manner and of materials that make it tamper-proof.
The following guidlines apply:
- ONLY pharmaceutical drugs are to be placed in the box (over-the-counter OR prescription medication).
- This VOLUNTARY collection/disposal process is FREE and ANONYMOUS.
- NO needles, syringes or lancets will be collected. If you need to dispose of these items, Franklin Regional Hospital has specific collection days for sharps. Please call 603-934-2060 for more information.
Tips for Preventing Misuse:
- Keep all of your current medications in a SAFE and SECURE location where others cannot access them, ideally a location that can be locked.
- Use a Medication Tracking Form to keep track of your current medications, both over-the-counter and prescription.
- Regularly dispose of your unused or expired medications. FLUSHING medications is NOT recommended.
