FRANKLIN TRANSFER STATION LOCATION

 

The Franklin Transfer Station is located at 75 Punch Brook Road.  From the intersection of Route 3 and Route 3A/11, go south on Route 3 (South Main Street) 2.2 miles to

Punch Brook Road (which will be on your right).

 

HOURS OF OPERATION

 

The hours of operation for the Franklin Transfer Station are 7:30 am to 3:00 pm, Tuesdays through Saturdays.  The Transfer Station is CLOSED Sundays, Mondays and Holidays.

 

HAULING LITTER TO THE TRANSFER STATION

 

Pursuant to Franklin City Code, ALL loads of trash and debris must be covered when in transit to the Transfer Station, please!

 

PERMITS

 

Decals for Residential and Commercial Facility use may be obtained at the Transfer Station and are issued annually in June.  Decals must be clearly displayed on the passenger side of the vehicle.  Out-of-town contractors doing business in the City of Franklin must obtain an annual application from the Municipal Services Department, located at 43 West Bow Street in Franklin, New Hampshire.  Credit applications are also available to start a charge account.  The telephone number for Municipal Services is 603-934-4103

GENERAL DISPOSAL INFORMATION

 

Household trash is disposed of in the Transfer Station Hopper.  All solid waste, other than trash, must be separated and disposed of at specified drop-off areas within the facility.  Recycling is also available.  For a detailed breakdown of what type of items are acceptable for disposal / recycling, and how such items should be prepared for drop-off at the Transfer Station, please see the “Disposal Guidelines” flyer.

 

HAZARDOUS WASTE AND PROHIBITED ITEMS

 

Certain items are unacceptable for drop-off at the Transfer Station.  Most of the items listed below are accepted at the annual Hazardous Waste Collection Day, which is held the last Saturday in July.  The City of Franklin Transfer Station does not accept the following items:

LAKES REGION HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS PRODUCT FACILITY

 

The Lakes Region Household Hazardous Product Facility is a storage facility where residents and taxpayers can safely and conveniently dispose of unwanted materials that pose a threat to the human and natural environment.

 

This Facility is open May through October, every third Saturday (8:30 am – 12:00 noon).  Their telephone number is 569-5826.  They are located at 404 Beech Pond Road in Wolfeboro.  Their email address is lrhhpf@metrocast.net.

 

To bring hazardous materials to this Facility, you will be charged a fee (0-5 gallons - $40.00 or 6-10 gallons - $80.00).  Each household is limited to 10 gallons.  Checks can be made out to LRHHPF (Lakes Region Household Hazardous Product Facility).

 

The following are some other ways to reduce the impact on the environment:  Avoid products that contain hazardous ingredients, whenever possible; Buy only as much as you will use right away and give leftovers to friends or neighbors; Tell your retailer that you want to buy recycled products; Store leftovers in their original containers with the labels intact, away from children and pets.

Recyclables Accepted at the Transfer Station:  Aluminum, glass, newspaper, phone books, cardboard, mixed paper, metal, waste oil, yard waste, asphalt, brick / concrete rubble and demolition material.

 

Items accepted for Fee at the Transfer Station:  The City of Franklin charges fees to cover disposal costs for certain materials including propane tanks, demolition material, construction debris, shingles, tires, computers, computer monitors, televisions sets (including big screen and console), VCR’s, fax machines, copiers, dehumidifiers, fluorescent light bulbs, freezers, refrigerators, air conditioners, washers, dryers, stoves.

 

Items Prohibited at the Transfer Station:  Animal carcasses, automotive parts, antifreeze, household hazardous waste, oil based paint and asbestos.

 

Please Help Us To Keep Franklin Clean!

 

The City of Franklin, Municipal Services Department urges residents and businesses to maximize their recycling efforts for both economic and environmental benefits.  Due to facility operations, all solid waste deposited for disposal must be separated and discarded at appropriate disposal areas throughout the facility.  Recycling of paper, cardboard, metals and glass reduces the amount of waste to be incinerated and is strongly encouraged.  Some items require a disposal fee and must be paid prior to disposal.

 

Trash must be separated and disposed of as follows with NO HAZARDOUS WASTE:

 

Household and Commercial Trash

Normal household rubbish typically includes paper, plastic, wet garbage, carpeting, mattresses and cushions.  Recycling is optional, but encouraged.  Normal household trash is disposed of in the main Transfer Station Hopper. 

 

Separation of all other items listed below (at specified areas within the facility) is mandatory and these items cannot be disposed of with trash:

 

Construction / Demolition Material

Materials include all painted, glued and treated wood waste, plaster, sheetrock, wood shingles, furniture, wood paneling, insulation, wooden storm windows, vinyl siding & flooring, plastic & Formica countertops, fencing and other building materials.  No greater than 4-foot lengths.  This is a pay item requiring loads to be weighed prior to disposal.  NO ASBESTOS PRODUCTS.

 

Burnable Wood Waste

Wood waste includes clean, un-treated, un-painted, non-glued lumber, clean pallets, logs and brush, up to 5 inches in diameter.  All wood waste must be no greater than 6 feet in length.  No leaves; No painted, treated or glued wood; No stumps.

 

Stumps

Stumps from residential dwellings may be disposed of by making arrangements with the Municipal Services Department Office at 934-4103.

 

Leaves / Yard Waste

Leaves and yard waste must be clean of sand, litter, brush, logs and other contaminants.  Material must be emptied from containers and /or bags.  Pine needles, leaves, lawn and garden clippings are all acceptable.  Do not empty these items at the burn pile please!

 

Asphalt  Shingles

Asphalt shingles must be free of all other materials and are to be disposed of in a designated area.  Shingles are a pay item requiring loads to be weighed prior to disposal.

 

Tires

Tires should be removed from rims.  The City accepts tires up to 24” in size.  There is a fee required to dispose of tires at the Transfer Station.

 

Metals

There is no charge to dispose of various metals in the metal bin, however, all contaminants must be stripped and removed from any materials deposited.  Appliances and electronics should not be disposed of in the metal bin.  Typical items accepted in the metal bin include steel, copper, iron, aluminum, brass, etc.  No automotive parts, closed / pressurized containers, batteries, gas tanks or cable wire in the metal bin.

 

Household Appliances and White Goods,

Appliances, including freezers, refrigerators, washers, dryers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers and stoves, are accepted at designated drop-off areas.  As some appliances require Freon removal, there is a fee to dispose of these items.

 

Propane Tanks

Empty tanks up to 20 lb. capacity will be accepted for a fee.

 

Electronics

CPU’s, laptops, key boards, televisions, VCR’s, CD players, computer screens and monitors, fax and copy machines, printers, microwave ovens and other electronic devices are collected for a disposal fee.

 

Waste Oil

Waste oil is accepted at the recycling building.  Large quantities of over 5 gallons need prior approval.  Waste Oil cannot be contaminated with antifreeze, gasoline, paint thinner, water or any other chemicals.  If it is contaminated, please save it and bring it to the annual Hazardous Waste Collection Day.

 

Water Based / Latex Paints

All Latex paint cans will be accepted at the compactor hopper, provided they are properly prepared for disposal prior to drop-off.  Prior to drop-off, remove the cover or lid and fill the paint cans with 50% sand or kitty litter, let air cure until paint is dry then replace cover or lid for disposal.

 

Oil Based Paint / Varnishes

Oil based paints and varnishes may only be disposed of at the annual Hazardous Waste Collection Day, or you may wish to contact the permanent Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center in Wolfeboro at 569-5826.

 

Batteries

Both dry cell and wet cell batteries are accepted.  Such batteries include boat, automobile, rechargeable, cd, lithium, alkaline, etc.  See the Transfer Station attendant for specific drop-off location.

 

Asphalt, Stone, Brick and Concrete Rubble Material

If you have large quantities of these materials, call the MSD Office to make arrangements for hauling it to the City pit.  Smaller amounts can be dropped off at the Transfer Station by seeing the attendant.

 

Goodwill Collection

There is a Goodwill Collection container located at the facility for all types of clothing and shoes, which are in good condition.  Unclean, torn clothing should be considered household trash.

 

Glass Bottles and Jars

All jar covers and bottle caps should be removed prior to disposal.  Glass bottles and jars are recycled at the drop-off bins.  No mirrors, plate glass, ceramics, windshields, light bulbs, please!  Glass bottles and jars only.

 

Corrugated Cardboard

This is double walled cardboard only.  Other types of cardboard, such as cereal and shoe boxes, should be thrown in with recycled mixed paper or as household trash.  All corrugated cardboard must be flattened, free of staples, strapping and packing material such as Styrofoam.

 

Mixed Paper

These items, including clean newspaper, magazines, sheet paper, office paper, blueprint paper and telephone books, may be co-mingled and recycled in the designated bin at the recycling building.

 

Aluminum Cans (Not tin cans)

Aluminum cans may be recycled at the specified receptacle located at the recycling building.

 

Flourescent Tubes and Bulbs

Bulbs that are unbroken must be recycled.  There is a fee charged.  Please see the attendant for drop-off.

Separation of all items is mandatory at the Transfer Station.  Separation and recycling allows for the City to successfully dispose of and recycle the various types of solid waste in the proper and most economical fashion.  Residential recyclable materials such as cardboard, newspaper & mixed paper, aluminum cans and clean used motor oil may be disposed of at no charge.

Owner-occupied residential rubbish, along with metal, unpainted wood only, dried up latex paint or furniture without springs may be disposed of at no charge.  Also accepted at no charge are CPU’s, Printers, Keyboards, Wiring & Computer Mouse.

*There will be an additional charge of $35.00 for any Computer Monitor or Television with broken glass/CRT.

 

Transfer Facility stickers are available at the Transfer Station Office.  Residential stickers are free of charge and issued for their vehicle upon proof of residency.  Commercial users of the facility receive a sticker for the vehicle and will be charged according to the above list. 

Household Hazardous Waste Day is held on the last Saturday in July.  Hazardous waste is not accepted at the Transfer Station.  Such items include oil based paints, stains, fertilizers, pesticides, household cleaners, chemicals, antifreeze etc.  NO latex paint is accepted on this day.  Pamphlets for the event may be obtained from the MSD Office or at the Transfer Station Office. 

The City has a Leaf Vacuum truck which goes around the City once a year to mechanically pick up leaves that are raked to the side of the road.
