Ordinance Summary

NOTICE:  Trash and Recycling Pick-up

During the month of August 2011, Municipal Services will be doing vehicle maintenance on the trash and recycling vehicles. During this time frame, the trash and recycling pick-up will be modified, with the recycling being picked up in the first half of the day and the trash being picked up the second half of the day. Please bear with us during this time, your garbage may not be picked up as you are accustomed to and if it is not picked up on the pick-up day, please leave it out as it will be picked up on the following day!  Sorry for any inconvenience.  For further questions or concerns, please contact Municipal Services at (603) 934-4103, extension 12.

The Northeast Resource Recovery Association (NRRA) is pleased to recognize the City of Franklin for their outstanding efforts in recycling and as "NRRA's Most Improved Facility for 2011".

Franklin started shipping Single Stream material through NRRA in March of 2010 and began shipping C&D and Vegetable Oil through NRRA in 2010 as well.

In 2009, Franklin recycled 79 pounds per person through NRRA, but in 2010 Franklin recycled 267 pounds per person or an additional 188 pounds per person!!!

Update:  The city is averaging 11 tons of trash and 6 tons of recycling on each trash route.  Overall Recycling is about 84 tons a month!

Please place your trash and recycling containers at least 5 feet apart from each other and away from all other obstacles

Styrofoam is NOT recyclable in our program, even if it has a recycling symbol (commonly with the #6).

Plastic Shopping Bags are NOT recyclable in our program, even if they have a recycling symbol (commonly with the #2 or #4).
(Please return Plastic Shopping Bags to their point of origin. Most grocery stores, along with many other retailers, now have Plastic Bag Recycling Bins located near the entrance of the store and will accept all recyclable bags. Another option is reusable shopping bags which are now widely available.)

                               How It Works

ü  Mandatory Recycling will be enforced at the Curbside and at the Transfer Station.

ü  Residents will be provided (2) containers: (1) for trash and (1) for recyclables similar to the containers illustrated above, color and size may vary; delivered to your home starting the week of April 6th.

ü  If you choose to recycle your old trash cans, you may do so at the transfer station.

ü  Recyclables must be in a separate container from trash.

ü  Trash must be bagged and must fit within the container with the lid closed.

ü  Recyclables must be loose (not bagged) and co-mingled (there is no need to separate recyclables by type) within the container with the lid closed.

ü  In order to maximize space, recyclables should be broken down. Anything over the size of a 5 gallon bucket must be broken down.

ü  Containers must be wheeled out to the curb no earlier than 12 hours before pick up and no later than 6:45 am on collection day.

ü  Notice: Your curbside collection day may change. Further details to be released soon.

ü  Remove the containers from the street at the end of collection day.

ü  Loose trash or trash outside of the container will not be picked up.

ü  Trash & recyclables are also accepted at the transfer station.

ü  The more we Recycle, the more Money we save!

ü  Automated collection trucks (similar to the one shown above) will pick up both trash & recyclables.

ü  Please remember to clear ice & snow from an area at curbside for containers in the winter!

ü  Containers must be placed as depicted above, separated, so that the truck can pick them up. The apron or end of your driveway is a perfect spot for containers.

ü  Place the container at least 3 feet from objects (such as mailboxes, fences, etc)

ü  Do not place under low hanging branches.

ü  The lid must open from the road side; handle faces house.
